MRI Safety
MRI safety guidelines are established by the MRI Safety Committee and apply to all clinical and research MRI systems operated at our Practice. Safety policies and procedures are evaluated on a monthly basis by the MRI Safety Committee. The goal of this page is to provide safety information for patients.
MRI Eligibility
- Everyone in contact with the magnetic field should be screened for contraindications
- Before entering the MR environment or MR system room, you must remove ALL metallic objects including hearing aids, dentures, partial plates, keys, beeper, cell phone, eyeglasses, hair pins, barrettes, jewelry, body piercings, money clip, credit cards, bank cards, magnetic strip cards, coins, pens, pocket knife, nail clipper, tools, clothing
- The following contraindications for MRI are the most common but all patients must be thoroughly screened prior to imaging. Medical devices not listed below will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
- Metallic fragments or foreign bodies in your head, face, neck or body
- Cardiac Pacemaker
- Electronic Implant or Device
- Spinal Cord Stimulator
- Cochlear, Otologic or Ear Implant
- Internal Electrodes or wires (including abandoned leads)
- Cardiac stents
- Artificial heart valves
- Shunt
- Prosthesis
- Radiation implants
- Artificial limbs
- Body piercings
- Wire mesh implants
- Surgical staples
- Tattoos or permanent makeup
